María Goya, a Madrid-based fashion brand, needed a multilingual e-commerce platform to showcase its collections. The design reflected the brand’s values of craftsmanship and elegance, with a minimalist aesthetic highlighting the exclusivity of each piece.

My role was to translate these brand values into an e-commerce experience built on Shopify, focusing on scalability and future adaptability. I crafted a style guide and designed key pages like the home, product list, and product detail pages.

About the client

María Goya is a Madrid-based fashion brand that designs timeless womenswear blending Victorian, Japanese, and modern influences. Their handcrafted collections use high-quality natural materials like wool, linen, and silk, emphasizing practicality, comfort, and feminine elegance.

The challenge

María Goya needed an easy-to-manage Shopify site to sell around 50 products. The website had to reflect their core values of exclusivity, elegance, and sustainability, while ensuring scalability for future growth.

The main objective was to develop a minimalist design that let the product photography shine. Shopify’s customization constraints made it essential to balance simplicity with functionality, while staying true to the brand’s identity.

The process

We began with a detailed meeting to fully understand María Goya’s brand philosophy and requirements for the e-commerce store.

After a thorough benchmarking process, I created a moodboard to capture the brand’s aesthetics and values. This helped align the design direction, focusing on a minimalist yet sophisticated look.

Through multiple design iterations, I tested different home page layouts and explored a variety of typography options. The final selection was IBM Plex Mono, chosen for its modern and clean appearance, which aligned with the brand’s elegant style.

I also defined a neutral color palette of charcoal, gray, and off-white, to let the product images take center stage.

Once approved, I developed a comprehensive style guide, establishing typography scales, color schemes, and spacing guidelines. This ensured a consistent user experience and a cohesive visual identity throughout the digital product.

In this case, wireframes were not necessary since Shopify’s framework provided predefined structures, allowing us to focus directly on visual design and customization. Finally, I designed the key pages in a fully responsive layout, applying the style guide to maintain visual consistency across all devices.

The solution

The final design was a scalable Shopify store that embodied María Goya’s brand values through minimalism and sophisticated simplicity. The neutral color palette and clean typography provided a perfect backdrop for the product images, highlighting the craftsmanship of the garments.

The site was built to be easily manageable and adaptable to new collections, ensuring it meets the brand’s future needs.

Conclusion

The new e-commerce platform effectively captured María Goya’s brand essence, providing an intuitive and elegant shopping experience. The design supports current business needs and is scalable for future growth, providing a solid foundation for increased sales and engagement.
